Then...
Steamboat was supposedly named after a spring whose spouting water sounded like a Steamboat. The spring remains but the geyser is now dormant-possibly caused by pranksters blocking the spring with rocks.Although Steamboat was first settled in 1875, it wasn't incorporated until 1900. Prior to this, the town was only accessible during the summer via trails, and there was no nearby railroad. Steamboat later became a ranching community known for its high mountain hay production.
Carl Howelson first introduced skiing to Steamboat in 1912. Howelson Hill and Mt. Werner ski areas continue to lure tourists to their perfect champagne powdered slopes.
Now...
As a result of boasting two ski areas and producing more Olympic athletes than any other U.S. town, Steamboat has been dubbed "Ski Town U.S.A."Steamboat Springs is a close-knit community which serves as the cultural, medical, governmental, and economic hub for Routt County. Tourists are treated with warm hospitality in the beautiful Yampa Valley. Ranching continues to play a major role in the area. It's not uncommon to see cattle drives or sheep grazing on the rolling green pastures near Steamboat.
The rich history is reflected in the downtown architecture of the old west, some buildings dating back to the early 1900's. The Mountain area consists of shops, restaurants and lodging, beautifully nestled around the Mount Werner Ski Mountain, all with expansive valley views. The Yampa River meanders dreamily through the town where bike paths and pedestrian trails abound.
Are you a water lover? Steamboat has more than 100 mineral springs, some of which are open for public use. Soak away your aches after a long day of skiing or completely relax after spending the day engaged in your favorite outdoor activity.
Summer in Steamboat offers scenic hiking, dirt-biking, a weekly rodeo, kayaking, balloon rides, golf, horseback riding and outdoor musical concerts.
